GANs share important values and ways of working that can make working together rather easy. And since each GAN focuses upon a unique issue like water or corruption, as a whole GANs cover a wide range of issues that are critical to the world's future. By focusing their energy collectively in a particular location, they can make a substantial contribution to improving lives and the environment. However, this raises issues about how to initiate and maintain such action.

Status: The CoP in this case is really a project in Guatemala, led by Jim and supported by Sanjeev. The project team was formed and staff hired in January. It is a nine-month initiative that aims to bring together 8-10 GANs with two focal questions: one about how to create robust local-to-global relationships with a focus upon the potential role of local government in GANs, and the other is about the potential for inter-GAN activity and how to develop it.

Both CARE and the Lindenberg Center are also actively involved. CARE is the local host of the initiative and the Lindenberg Center is contributing two student action-researchers for the summer months. A two-part meeting is being organized for July to review the project's implementation: in the first part, GAN regional leaders will discuss the collaborative efforts, and in the second part other project stakeholders including local and national communities, government officials and businesses will be brought in to participate.
